LASIK

The shape of the cornea is a major factor in determining how well you can see. A cornea that is too flat causes farsightedness, and one that is too steep results in nearsightedness. An unevenly curved cornea causes astigmatism. LASIK, or “laser in-situ keratomileusis,” is a procedure designed to help patients reduce their dependence on glasses and contacts by reshaping the irregularly shaped cornea using highly precise, no-heat laser technology.

What should I expect from the LASIK procedure?

Before your procedure, you will be given numbing eye drops to keep you comfortable, as well as the option to take a mild sedative to help you relax. A small, gentle eyelid holder will prevent you from blinking and an advanced tracking system will follow even the slightest eye movements, ensuring that if the eye moves outside the treatment zone, the laser will stop. You may be instructed to focus on a blinking red light as your surgeon uses the laser to prepare the surface of the cornea. The laser, which has been programmed to recognize your eye, will then be used to reshape the cornea with high-energy microsecond pulses. After the desired shape has been achieved, natural healing begins rapidly. The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes.
