Do people with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) need more calcium? Does more calcium prevent ARMD? Do I have to drink cow milk or is soy milk good? Am I getting too much calcium?
These are important questions with unclear answers. One study suggest people eating calcium-rich foods may be less likely to develop ARMD; while another say different. So which is it then?
According to Dr. Emily Chew, a researcher at the National Eye Institute, “there just isn’t enough evidence yet to consider taking calcium for the treatment of [ARMD]”. “Habits that are good for our overall health are good for the eyes.” Balanced diets, exercise, and not smoking are the best way towards lessening the chances of developing overall eye health problem.
